Birthday Weekend :: Day 1 in San Sebastián

I decided to spend my birthday in San Sebastián with my roommates.

We woke up at the crack of dawn to catch the 7:30 am bus to San Sebastián. We hopped on the bus just seconds before it drove away. About an hour and a half later we arrived and checked into our hostel. We grabbed some breakfast outside and enjoyed the tranquil morning.

We snapped a few photos of the beach before going on a 30 minute hike around the coastline to reach a funicular, which would take us to a spot rumored to have the best view of the city.

After soaking in this panoramic view of the city, we hit the beach for a few hours. The weather was just hot enough for a quick dip into the ocean and a lazy nap on the warm sand.

After, we grabbed a few mediocre pintxos for a late afternoon snack (all our favorite places were closed until dinner time) and went shopping.

A few friends joined us in the evening for the highly anticipated and main event of the day - PINTXOS! J and I were really excited to introduce our friends to the delicious pintxos we discovered our first weekend in San Sebastián.

First stop - brocheta de gambas! (refer to my first San Sebastián post) Everyone agreed that this was delicious. Even S (my other roommate) approved even though she isn't a big fan of seafood.

Second stop - beef cheeks! It was quite entertaining to see the expression on some faces after taking a bite out of this dish.

One per person, no sharing this time...

Third stop - foie gras! Our group cleared the restaurant of their foie gras. Literally.

Fourth stop - we went to a bar infamous for their pro ETA propaganda. We ogled at the pictures of missing ETA members, sipped a red drink that tasted like a cross between licorice and cough syrup. And we were off.

Fifth stop - patatas bravas and mussels! More yummy goodness.

Final stop - El Fuero Negro for some ridiculously strong drinks which I had to pass on. While in the bathroom, I discovered chalk board walls. I, being the obnoxious American, erased a large section right smack in the middle of the wall and scribbled the following:

That concludes day one, stay tuned for day two!
